"It hurts here, but that may not be where the problem actually is. A lot of the time it's referred pain, and just treating the spot where it hurts doesn't get to what's actually going on." - Mary

Meet Mary
Mary earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science at UNM with physical therapy school in mind, but when it came time to apply, it didn't feel like the right next step. Massage therapy offered the same core idea, working with the musculoskeletal system to improve range of motion and reduce pain, without locking her into a path that wasn't quite fitting yet.
She started out doing more traditional spa-style massage to build hands-on experience, but everything changed when she took a continuing education class in Los Alamos, the same training background Jonathan comes from. That class introduced her to a different way of thinking about pain: it's not enough to just rub where something hurts. Often the actual problem is somewhere else entirely, and the ache you feel is a symptom of a pattern happening upstream. That idea has shaped how she treats every client since.
Mary still spends part of her week working in Los Alamos alongside that same training team, continuing to build on those skills. Between her exercise science background and her orthopedic training, she brings a level of assessment to her sessions that goes beyond a standard massage.
What to Expect during your Massage Session
Mary's Approach
When you come in with a specific issue, Mary starts by testing it. For something like a shoulder problem, that typically means checking your range of motion to see what's actually restricted, then running a few simple orthopedic tests to narrow down which muscle or structure is the real source of the problem. From there, she moves into hands-on work: loosening tight, adhered tissue with traditional massage technique, then working into passive range of motion to see how the area responds.
She retests as she goes. If a technique is working, she can tell, and if it isn't, she adjusts rather than continuing on a plan that isn't helping. Sessions typically close with a few exercises or stretches, sometimes nerve glide work, designed specifically to help you hold onto the results after you leave. Even with a single focus area, Mary works your whole system, not just the one spot.
What to Expect
Mary's upfront about one thing before you book: this isn't a purely relaxing massage. It's gentle, and she'll meet you exactly where you are, but the goal of the session is addressing what's actually going on in your body, not just producing an hour of relaxation.
"I'm going to meet you where you're at. If you're in a lot of pain, I'm not going to have you doing intense stretches. It's gentle, and it's built around you." -Mary
Most first-time clients come in for low back pain, shoulder pain, or neck issues, and headaches or migraines are common too. Neck tension and tension headaches tend to respond especially well and usually very quickly, and Mary can also work on scar tissue where needed.
Two examples stand out. One client came in with hip pain; after addressing pelvic alignment and following up with stabilizing work, the client could bend down and touch their toes again, something they hadn't been able to do before the session. Another client came in on the third day of an active migraine, and cranial work during the session brought real relief before they left.
After Your Session
Part of what makes Mary's work effective long-term is what happens after you leave the table. She'll typically send you home with a few simple exercises or stretches to keep the results from fading between sessions. It's not a long-term commitment or a strict program, just enough to help your body hold onto the progress you made in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking of booking with Mary but have a few questions? Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions to help you understand more about our massage therapy services and what to expect when you see Mary at Massage at Blue Sky.
What should I expect during my first session with Mary?
Your session usually starts with a quick assessment: checking your range of motion and running a few simple orthopedic tests to pinpoint what's actually causing your pain. From there, she moves into hands-on massage and treatment focused on that finding, working your whole body while keeping the main focus on your specific issue. Most sessions end with a couple of stretches or exercises to take home.
Is this going to feel like a regular relaxing massage?
Not entirely, and Mary is upfront about that. Her work is gentle and she'll always meet you where you are, but the focus is on addressing what's actually causing your pain rather than an hour of pure relaxation. If you're dealing with a lot of pain or stress, she'll adjust the pace and intensity accordingly.
Do I need to undress for my session?
No. All of Mary's sessions are fully clothed, and her techniques are designed to work through comfortable, loose clothing.
What conditions does Mary treat most often?
Low back pain, shoulder pain, and neck issues are the most common reasons clients see her, along with headaches and migraines. She's seen especially fast, noticeable results with neck tension and tension headaches.
Will I need to do anything at home after my session?
Often, yes. Mary typically sends clients home with a few simple stretches or exercises tailored to what was addressed during the session. It's not a demanding routine, but doing it consistently makes a real difference in how long the results last.
