Medical & Manual Massage Therapy in Albuquerque

Jonathan, LMT
Therapeutic Massage in Albuquerque

Treat the Cause, not the Symptom.

If you've dealt with a pain that never fully resolves, one that's been scanned, tested, and shrugged at, Jonathan's approach may be the missing piece. He specializes in tracing pain back to where it actually starts, which is often somewhere other than where you feel it, and he's especially known for helping people recover after surgery, including dealing with scar tissue, childbirth (postpartum), or an injury that's outlasted every other treatment.

Jonathan sees clients in Albuquerque only once a month, usually on Saturdays.

"A lot of people's migraines trace back to an epidural they got having a kid fifteen years ago. It's surprising, but once you understand where it's actually coming from, you can do something about it."

Meet Jonathan

Jonathan trained at the Musculoskeletal Specialists clinic in Los Alamos, NM, where he spent close to two years learning techniques that go well beyond a typical massage. His license covers manual therapy broadly, but his actual training is closer to naturopathic and osteopathic assessment work: evaluating the body's systems, not just rubbing out sore muscles. His practice is rooted in a strong understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and musculoskeletal function.

His path into this work started personally. Years ago he dealt with unexplained leg spasms that doctors couldn't resolve. What finally helped was this style of work, tracing the problem to its actual source instead of just treating where it hurt. That evidence-informed experience shapes how he treats every client who comes to him with a pain that hasn't responded to anything else.

He's fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, CPR and BLS certified, and currently working toward an additional certification in exercise-based rehabilitation. Outside the clinic, he stays active with mountain biking, hiking, and carpentry, and he brings that same "always learning, always investigating" mindset into how he treats every client.

Jonathan currently works with us in Albuquerque once a month, typically the second Saturday, while continuing to build his caseload here alongside his work in Los Alamos. Because his Albuquerque days are limited, sessions tend to book out in advance, so it's worth reserving your spot as early as you can. If more frequent care is what you need between visits, he can coordinate directly with Mary, who works from a similar clinical background.

What to Expect during your Massage Session

Jonathan's Approach

Jonathan's first question is "why does it hurt there," choosing to focus on the WHY instead of just the location of the pain itself. The body works like a suspension bridge. Tension in one spot is very often the result of something else nearby not doing its job. A shoulder that won't release might trace back to a nerve. A stubborn headache might trace back to an old epidural or a whiplash injury from years ago. Jonathan's training is built around finding that connection.

Sessions with Jonathan are fully clothed, with no undressing required. His techniques are designed to work through light clothing, so you can focus on the treatment itself rather than worrying about what to wear.

During a session, he works with muscles, fascia, nerves, and even the venous and visceral systems where appropriate, always through gentle, specific techniques rather than forceful ones. Much of his most effective work involves very light touch, guiding the nervous system to release a restriction rather than forcing tissue to move. He evaluates as he treats, constantly checking whether something has actually released rather than assuming it has.

He can't diagnose medical conditions, and he's upfront about that. What he can do is identify patterns, rule things out, and tell you plainly when something is outside his scope and worth a referral. He's helped clients get pointed toward further medical evaluation when something needed more than bodywork could offer.

Every client also leaves with homework: simple, practical exercises meant to keep the relief from wearing off. Instead of a quick fix, his goal is progress that holds up on its own over time.

Jonathan's Typical Clients

Jonathan's most common clients are recovering from a specific medical event: a C-section, a laparoscopic procedure, a hysterectomy or tubal ligation, or an epidural. He also frequently works with concussions and whiplash injuries, since these often affect the nervous system in ways that show up far from the original injury.

Beyond that, he sees a wide range of ages and conditions, from teenagers to clients in their eighties. Certain conditions, like active chemotherapy or specific pregnancy complications, require a doctor's clearance first, and he'll always ask about that up front rather than assume.

"We consider ourselves anatomists. We have a deep understanding of the anatomy and the processes that happen in the body, and we use that knowledge to bring it back into balance."

Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking of booking with Jonathan but have a few questions?  Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions to help you understand more about our massage therapy services and what to expect when you see Jonathan at Massage at Blue Sky.

How is Jonathan's massage different from a typical massage?

A typical massage works the muscle you're feeling pain in. Jonathan starts by figuring out why that muscle is tense in the first place, which is sometimes caused by something else entirely, like a nerve, an old injury, or scar tissue from a past surgery. He treats the muscle too, but the goal is finding and addressing the actual source so the relief holds.

Is it safe to see Jonathan after a C-section or other surgery?

Yes, this is one of the areas he sees most often. He works very often with women in postpartum, and always gently with scar tissue and surrounding tissue that can stay tight and restricted long after a C-section, laparoscopic procedure, hysterectomy, or tubal ligation. He'll always ask about your surgical history and timeline first, and for certain conditions, he may ask for a doctor's clearance before starting.

Will the session hurt?

No. Jonathan's techniques are intentionally gentle and specific rather than forceful, since forcing tissue to release tends to backfire and cause more guarding, not less. Many clients describe his work as surprisingly light-touch given how much changes afterward. If anything feels uncomfortable during a session, tell him and he'll adjust immediately.

Do I need to undress for my session with Jonathan?

No. All of his sessions are fully clothed. His techniques are built to work through clothing, so there's nothing to prepare for beyond wearing something comfortable you can move in.

How often is Jonathan available, and how far ahead should I book?

Right now, Jonathan sees clients in Albuquerque once a month, typically the second Saturday. Because his schedule here is limited, sessions often fill up in advance, so booking a few weeks ahead is a good idea. If you need more frequent sessions between his visits, he can help coordinate a plan with Mary.
